The Attic Chest

The Attic Chest

David had been a bit of a naughty boy in his youth. He had a habit of telling little white lies to get out of trouble. But as he grew older, he realized that honesty was the best policy. However, old habits die hard, and David couldn't resist the temptation to tell his wife, Clara, a little fib one day.

" Clara," he said, "I have a secret to tell you. But you have to promise me that you won't tell anyone else."

"Of course," Clara said. "You can trust me with anything."

"Well, you know that old chest in the attic?" David asked. "It belonged to my great-grandfather, who was a confidante to the British King. He used to travel all over the world with the King, and he brought back all sorts of treasures."

Clara 's eyes widened in excitement. "Wow," she said. "I didn't know that. What kind of treasures?"

"Oh, all sorts of things," David said. "Gold coins, jewels, expensive artifacts. You name it, it's probably in there."

Clara was breathless. "Can we open it?" she asked.

"Sure," David said. "But let's wait until I'm home from work. I don't want anyone else to see."

That night, after David came home from work, he and  Clara went up to the attic and opened the chest. Clara was disappointed to see that there was no treasure inside. There was just an old photo of David's great-grandfather amidst a crowd cheering and waving at a Royal procession.

"Is this it?" Clara asked.

"Well, yes," David said. "But it's still a valuable treasure. It's a piece of family history."

Clara wasn't convinced. She had been hoping for gold coins and jewels. But she didn't want to disappoint David, so she pretended to be excited about the photo.

The next day, Clara decided to call all her friends and tell them about the treasure chest. She was so excited that she couldn't keep it to herself.

"Did you know that my husband's great-grandfather was a confidante to the British King?" she asked her friends. "And he has a chest full of treasures in the attic."

Clara 's friends were all very impressed. They begged her to show them the treasure chest.

Clara agreed, but she was a little nervous. She knew that there was no real treasure inside, but she didn't want to admit it to her friends.

That afternoon, Clara invited all her friends over to see the treasure chest. When they arrived, she led them up to the attic and opened the chest.

Clara 's friends were all very disappointed. They had been expecting to see gold coins and jewels, but all they saw was an old photo of David 's great-grandfather.

"Is this it?" one of her friends asked.

"Well, yes," Clara said. "But it's still a valuable treasure. It's a piece of family history."

Clara 's friends didn't seem to agree. They all left the house looking very disappointed.

Clara was very embarrassed. She had been caught in a lie, and her friends were all thinking she was crazy.

That night, Clara confronted David. She told him that she knew he had lied to her about the treasure chest.

David apologized. He said that he had just wanted to impress her.

Clara forgave David, but she learned a valuable lesson that day: never tell a lie, especially a big one.
